Faith Journey

Mindful of the spiritual dimension I trust my life is some sort of pilgrimage: not a human being on a spiritual journey but rather a spiritual being on a human one. From a home to a home: returning to the One who is Creator.

But how do I connect with this One who is aware of me? Where do I find a foundation on which to build a reasoned relationship of this sensed deep reality?

It seemed to me that of all the sacred writings the Bible affirms the God-who-meets-us. In the biblical tradition God actively seeks to be known. God is Love – and love implies relationship. But where to start?

I have found that the good news written by John offers three helpful hooks upon which to hang our pilgrimage:

• Jesus said 'anyone who has seen me has seen the Father' (so by noticing how Jesus acts we discover God’s nature)
• Jesus says he has come to give new life (implying there is more to ‘life’ than we ordinarily experience it)
• Jesus goes to prepare a place for us (a place of abiding and resolution)

Jesus shows us how God affirms and nurtures relationship, and there is clearly heat-felt deep trust involved. Having said all this, I must admit that, for me, God is more absent now than ever (hopefully, the subject of a later article); yet I am still willing to be known as ‘one on the Way’: one who is loved by the One who knows me.
